HIKE FOR SUNDAY, JANUARY 23, 2022

Norton Woods from Revere St.

Join us for a winter hike through the New England Forestry Foundation’s beautiful Norton Memorial Forest – described by NEFF as follows:
The Norton Memorial Forest was given to NEFF in 1975 by Professor and Mrs. Frederick H. Norton of Gloucester. This actively managed land, consisting mostly of plantings of pine, received an award from the American Forest Institute as the Outstanding Tree Farm of Massachusetts. Professor Norton did most of the planting and road-building on the forest. The contrast between the appearance of Norton Memorial Forest and adjacent unmanaged land is startling, as Gloucester rests on bedrock with very thin soils.
We will wind back and forth through this stately pine forest, while also skirting the edges of the bordering deciduous woods.  See the map and route here.  With trees bare of leaves, the landscape becomes more visible and striking at this time of year.

The terrain is easy going most of the way, with normal ups and downs and mostly soft pine needles underfoot, but with a few rugged and rocky spots mixed in.    Total distance is about 3.6 miles.   Allow two hours from the starting point.

Meeting spot:   Meet at the parking lot at the very upper end of Revere Street, off Route 127 in Gloucester near the turn off to Annisquam.  Pass through the gates at the top of Revere St. to reach the small parking area, where public parking is allowed.   Please arrive early.  The hike will depart promptly at 10 AM.

As always, please wear proper hiking footwear and bring water; also poles if you use them.

Please note that dogs are not permitted on the Sunday Morning Hikes.

In the event of rain or snow, the hike may be canceled, and an email notification will go out at 8 AM the day of the hike.  Rain date will be January 30th.

Registration is limited to 20.  Please register early to ensure a spot, and if you cannot make it, please cancel your reservation, so others on the “wait list” can attend.   Please do not be a “no show.”
